Dojo Etiquette

  • All students and instructors are expected to demonstrate the highest level of Respect to others and to the school, at all times. The use of inappropriate and unwanted language and behavior will not be tolerated.
  • All students and instructors are expected to interact with Courtesy.
  • All students and instructors are expected to show Discipline, respecting the Dojo and the art of Kenpo Karate. The following Rules of the Dojo must be complied with at all times.

Rules of the Dojo

  • Black Belts must be addressed as Sensei and Brown Belts are to be addressed as Sempai.
  • A full uniform is required: Gi top, Gi pants, belt, athletic protector, and appropriate patches.
  • During summer months (Memorial Day through Labor Day), school T-shirts may be worn without Gi top.
  • Your belt is sacred; don't leave it lying around.
  • Turn and face away from the instructor and take a knee if you have to re-tie your belt during class.
  • A student must bow when entering and leaving the mat and private rooms.
  • Students are to immediately stop all action, including talking, and to pay attention when an instructor is talking.
  • All students must stop when anyone says "BREAK".
  • Show respect to training partners by bowing after working together.
  • Students are to remain in a square horse stance while in line during class unless otherwise specified.
  • Your instructor's time is valuable, don't waste it. Call if you will be unable to attend your lesson.
  • Take pride in your school and clean up after yourself. Recycle cans and bottles and throw trash away.
  • Sparring is only allowed with proper supervision and equipment.
  • Hit others the way you want to be hit; use control!
  • You are responsible for your own progress, or lack thereof, NOT your instructor. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
